The Great Barrier Reef

Pollution spreads far and wide, affecting ecosystems everywhere. 
Please forgive me if this is sounding really repetitive but I think you should really read this. We have been blessed with a beautiful and wondrous reef which we are killing with pollution.

Every year the reef is effected by run off and sediments choking the reef. The majority of the time, we are unaware that we are doing this but regardless our actions are killing the reef. the 2600 kilometre long expanse of beauty is slowing being decimated by pollution, climate change, and other human impacts. 

The Impact of Pollution:
Sediment, nutrient and pesticide pollution from catchment run-off is also affecting the health and resilience of the reef ecosystem.  
The amount of sediment flowing into the marine park has quadrupled over the past 150 years. This increase can largely be blamed on grazing and cropping expansion in the catchment, which has also resulted in the loss of native vegetation and wetlands. 
Nutrient loads have also increased, encouraging algae blooms, which, in turn, provide food for larvae of the devastating crown-of-thorns starfish. In addition, nearly one-third of the reef is now exposed to pesticides.

The reef is currently experiencing massive problems with the crown of thorns starfish. The crown of thorns starfish is "a coral eating starfish or sea star native to coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region". This puts the Great Barrier Reef at risk because if these starfish become too abundant, they will simply eat all of the coral in the reef. "When crown-of-thorn starfish numbers are low, corals can recover from any damage caused by their feeding - maintaining a balanced and healthy environment. At these times, control is not required, as this is a naturally occurring event. However, when the crown-of-thorns starfish population increases to a point where the coral can no longer recover from the damage caused, there is   significant danger to the health of the reef. This is called a crown-of-thorns starfish outbreak." Throughout history, outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish have occurred approximately every 80 years or so. In recent years, these outbreaks have increased in frequency until now they are occurring ever 15 years. It is thought that a decline in water quality entering the reef from water ways is to blame.

THE CORALS' SKELETONS STILL REMAIN, BUT THEY ARE NOT FUNCTIONING.The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Outlook Report for the Great Barrier Reef in 2009 stated: “the threats of increasing sea temperature, ocean acidification and rising sea level are assessed as very high risk to the ecosystem... . Their impact will be compounded by each other and by other existing regional and local threats". Increasing sea temperature affects the Great Barrier Reef as it causes coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is when the relationship between the coral and the algae which gives the coral its colour, breaks down. Rising sea level temperatures cause the relationship to break down by causing the coral to bleach. Coral can be very sensitive to changes in sea temperature. For example, a rise of one degree celcius for four weeks can cause some types of coral to bleach. Cases of coral bleaching are set to become more common as sea temperatures rise due to climate change. 

The Impact of Ships:
One other human impact upon the Great Barrier Reef is the large amount of ships passing through the area annually. As the reef extends down much of the Queensland coast, it consequently has an abundance of maritime traffic constantly passing over it. It is not just when ships have accidents over the reef is it effected. The ships passing over the reef drop debris and other objects foreign to the reef. Additionally, the ships that travel over the Great Barrier Reef have their hulls covered in a substance known as Tributyltin. Tributylin preserves the hull of the ships but is toxic to the reef and can impact the various marine organisms that it comes into contact with. 

The Great Barrier Reef is under attack from many different fronts, some natural and some man made, but one thing they all have in common is that the reason they are impacting the Great Barrier Reef is because they have been created, or stimulated, by humans.

It's good to bin it but...

Although binning your rubbish stops litter from affecting animals, it doesn't necessarily fix our pollution problems. Every time you put rubbish in the bin, it goes to land fill. This rubbish can stay in the ground for hundreds of years, being eaten by animals and entering into the food chain. Because these days there is so much rubbish I think its critical for people to start using the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

First there's Reduce. Its really important to actually think about what you are buying and try to reduce it. For example you might go out and buy a packet of muesli bars that are all individually rapped in plastic. Why not buy the ingredients in bulk and then make your own? Sure it might take some time but it will definitely be healthier for you as well. There are also many things that are already made out of recycled plastic or cardboard that are on offer to buy.  

Ok so its important to reduce but you cant cut down EVERYTHING, and that is were reusing comes in. Think about all the drink bottles, jars, plastic containers and card bored boxes you simply toss away. They could actually come in pretty handy. Jars are great to store things in and obviously you can reuse plastic drink bottles ( in the rare occasion you do buy them ;) ). 

Last but not least there's good old recycling. Recycling is SO important, it allows the plastic, glass and card board we buy, use and throw out to be remade into something else again. Recently I realized my house hold doesn't really do much in there part to recycle. So I have set a challenge for my family and I to do a one week trial of recycling EVEREYTHING we can possible recycle. And I think you should too, yes that’s right I'm talking to YOU.

Second: set up a recycling bin near you normal bin. This means you will be able to decide which bin to put which piece of rubbish in an you wont be tempted to take the easier option. 



Third: encourage your family! It is a simple thing and although it might take a little bit longer then just throwing all of your rubbish into the normal bin it makes a huge difference and really benefits the environment.

 

TIPS: make sure you wash things like jars and milk bottles.

Waste and Disposable Items

Just yesterday, I had to sort through my childhood toys. As I sorted them into piles which I wanted to keep and which ones I wanted to throw away, I was shocked by the amount of waste. Things that were deemed unfit to pass on or to donate to charities were thrown in the bin. It was really appalling just how many usable things were just thrown away. All of these things are going to end up in landfill, contaminating the ground for decades to come. But it wasn't just toys that were thrown away, it was pieces of puzzles, little pieces of plastic and other little pieces of stuff I had been given over the years. It all went in the bin. Everything in today's society is viewed as being disposable. Companies actually pride themselves making items that are easy to dispose of when you are done. Containers, bottles, packets, bibs, cameras and many more. All of these items are designed to be thrown away when you are finished with them. I can guarantee that if you go looking through your house, you will find many disposable items. Next time you go to supermarket try to look for reusable items instead of disposable ones. You will be doing the environment a favour and you will be able to stop constantly buying disposable items.

It Doesn't Just Affect Us...

When we drop rubbish, it isn't just us who suffer. The rubbish you drop travels to the ocean and kills sea life. The plastic in the ocean sinks to the ocean floor, eaten by sea animals and is introduced into the food chain. There are some cases of medicines not fully digested by human, ending up in the fish that we consume.
 It is not just litter dropped near the coast that ends up in the ocean. Fertilizers spread by farmers inland also travel to the ocean through rivers and streams. The consequence of these introduced, excess nutrients allows large amounts of algae to grow, robbing the water of oxygen and creating dead areas where little of no marine life exists. There are in excess of 400 such areas recorded around the world.  These zones are known as dead zones.
 Marine animals additionally  consume other solid pollution constantly dropped in the ocean from both land and see (ships). Animals mistake it for food and  consequently consume it, often with fatal consequences. An example of this is  floating syndrome, mainly present in turtles. It is when turtles mistake a floating plastic bag for food and eat it.  The plastic bag then is caught in their stomach and they cannot dive to hunt for food.
Floating solid pollution, such as fishing nets, can also create hazards for marine animals as they can drift in the ocean for years, ensnaring animals. In some parts of the world, ocean currents for a transportation system for rubbish, carrying it hundreds of kilometers and  depositing it into one large area. There is one such place in the Pacific Ocean, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. One captain who traveled through this patch said "It seemed unbelievable, but I never found a clear spot. In the week it took to cross the subtropical high, no matter what time of day I looked, plastic debris was floating everywhere: bottles, bottle caps, wrappers, fragments."
 
Think of this next time you drop rubbish on the ground. Just because you don't drop it at the beach, it doesn't mean that it won't make it to the ocean. 

What is Pollution?

Pollution is defined as "the introduction of detrimental substances into the environment". This refers to many things including gases, foams, fertilizers and perhaps the most common, plastics. Just to label plastics as a form of pollution is not possible as plastic pollution can take many forms. It could be straws, plastic lids, water bottles, plastic bags and many more. Anywhere you walk today, you will see plastic pollution of some form. It could be rubbish on the ground, rubbish left on a table or someone just dropping it on the ground, not caring about the environment enough to put their rubbish in the bin. Just the other day, I saw a little boy eating something out of plastic packaging. When he finished eating, he simply threw his rubbish in the gutter and ran to catch up with his parents. This is appalling as the boy could not have been more than four. He will grow up, not believing that you should take the effort to throw rubbish in the bin, and when he has children, they will then follow their father, just adding to the pollution witnessed every day. Instead of helping the pollution epidemic, it will grow.
